U.S. Investigates Imported Furniture, Risk of Tariffs

Mỹ điều tra đồ nội thất nhập khẩu, nguy cơ áp thuế cao

U.S. investigates imported furniture following President Donald Trump’s announcement on Truth Social. He revealed that tariffs will be imposed on imported furniture, with the goal of reviving domestic furniture manufacturing in North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and other states.

1. Implementation Timeline

The investigation is expected to be completed within 50 days and will be conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

2. Reasons for Implementation

  • Rising prices: Previous tariffs contributed to a 0.7% increase in household furniture prices in July 2025.
  • Large import market: The U.S. imported USD 25.5 billion worth of furniture in 2024, up 7% compared to 2023.
  • Decline in labor force: Employment in the U.S. furniture manufacturing industry has sharply declined from 1.2 million workers (in 1979) to only 340,000 at present.
  • Protectionist trend: Furniture will be the next imported product to be investigated due to national security concerns.
